The New York Times said of Milstead's '80s films: "Those who could get past the unremitting weirdness of Divine's performance discovered that the actor/actress had genuine talent, including a natural sense of comic timing and an uncanny gift for slapstick." He was also described as "one of the few truly radical and essential artists of the century… was an audacious symbol of man's quest for liberty and freedom." Since his death, Divine has remained a cult figure, particularly with those in the LGBT community. In the 1970s, Milstead made the transition to theater and appeared in a number of productions, including Women Behind Bars and The Neon Woman, while continuing to star in such films as Polyester, Lust in the Dust and Hairspray. Ursula was modeled after the drag queen Divine but had a cis female voice actor. These films have since become cult classics. Concurrent with his acting career, he also had a successful career as a disco singer during the 1980s, at one point being described as "the most successful and in-demand disco performer in the world."īorn in Baltimore, Maryland, into a conservative, wealthy middle class family, he became involved with John Waters and his acting troupe, the Dreamlanders, in the mid-1960s and starred in a number of Waters's early films such as Mondo Trasho, Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble. He was often associated with independent filmmaker John Waters and starred in ten of Waters's films, usually in a leading role. Even so, he considered himself to be a character actor and performed male roles in a number of his later films. The ANTT® (aseptic non-touch technique) framework was developed to provide consistent step-by-step guidance for an aseptic non-touch technique that can be applied to several invasive procedures, including insertion of urinary catheters and peripheral cannulas, phlebotomy and administration of intravenous drugs (Box 1) (Rowley et al, 2010). Rowley et al (2010) recognised the need for a systematic and robust approach to aseptic technique that aims to prevent the contamination of wounds or other susceptible sites by removing variation in practice (Rowley et al, 2010). A ‘clean technique’ can be classed as medical asepsis or standard aseptic technique, as it uses the same principles. ![]() The term ‘clean technique’ is often used to describe the procedure for dressing chronic wounds it includes hand hygiene, preparation of a clean area with use of clean gloves and sterile instruments, such as scissors and forceps (Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Society, 2012). Surgical asepsis includes procedures to eliminate, rather than reduce, micro-organisms from an area and is practised by surgical teams and nurses in operating theatres and procedure areas, including interventional radiology (NICE, 2012). Medical asepsis – sometimes referred to as standard aseptic technique (Association of Safe Aseptic Practice, 2015) – aims to reduce the number of organisms and prevents their spread by use of standard principles of infection prevention (Loveday et al, 2014). Healthcare workers who perform an aseptic technique should receive training in how to correctly perform the procedure this should include a competency assessment (Loveday et al, 2014).Ī variety of terms are used to refer to aseptic technique this can be confusing for frontline healthcare staff (Loveday et al, 2014). An aseptic technique is required for many clinical interventions including wound dressing and insertion of invasive devices, as well as the maintenance of these devices (Loveday et al, 2014). What is asepsis?Īseptic technique is a process or procedure used to achieve asepsis to prevent the transfer of potentially pathogenic micro-organisms to a susceptible site that may result in the development of infection (Wilson, 2019). With the increased focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) there is also a need to carefully consider antibiotic usage, and prevention of infection can help to reduce the need for antimicrobials in the first place (HM Government, 2019). Indeed, as far back as the mid-1800s, the association between good hand hygiene and reduced infection rates was identified by Ignaz Semmelweis (Wilson, 2019). It could be suggested that understanding the principles of asepsis goes back as far as Florence Nightingale, who made the links between good hand hygiene and reduction in wound infections in 1855 (Rowley et al, 2010). The term asepsis means “the absence of potentially pathogenic micro-organisms” (Loveday et al, 2014). To reduce patients’ risk of developing a HCAI, it is vital to prevent the transmission of micro-organisms between staff and patients when undertaking any invasive procedure (Loveday et al, 2014) this can be achieved by asepsis. These infections are more likely to occur in patients with invasive devices, such as peripheral canulas, vascular access devices or urinary catheters in situ, or after invasive procedures (NICE, 2012). It is estimated that 300,000 patients each year in England will develop a healthcare-associated infection (HCAI) (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2012). The second half of USC’s dynamic Polish duo, freshman Michal Chmielewski, will compete in the 100-yard back alongside senior Vaggelis Makrygiannis. The upcoming races will offer him the chance to recreate last weekend’s magic and tally points for the Trojans at home. The invite will feature several events like the 500-yard free and 100-yard back which the team competed in last week.įreshman Krzysztof Chmielewski currently holds the top time amongst his competitors in the longer distance swim after winning the 500-yard free at SMU by four seconds, touching the wall in 4:15.18. “The scoreboard, it’s important, it’s Division I athletics, but it’s far more important for us to get the details right because that’s what’s going to pay off at the end of the season.” The Trojan’s will face some tough competition this weekend, but Richardson is confident in the team’s capabilities. “Can we do it when we’ve got everybody? And how loud can we be?” Richardson said. While Richardson noted that the nine athletes representing the men’s team at SMU had an “electric” performance, he’s excited to see the rest of the team start their season. Unlike the format of last weekend’s meet which sent only eight swimmers and one diver to Texas, the USC Invitational will be the first opportunity this season to see the whole team in action. “Of course it’s going to help if many people show up and support our guys,” Selin said.Īnd if that wasn’t convincing enough, “come watch nearly naked individuals beat down on some other California teams” laughed O’Grady. O’Grady, who was named Swimmer of the Meet last weekend, hopes to repeat his success, this time in a more familiar environment. “Less cardio, more just like explosiveness, so hopefully it pans out well for us.” “This week we’ve been working more on getting some speed stuff,” said junior Chris O’Grady. The team has also begun the process of tapering down endurance training to focus on pace. Head Coach Peter Richardson believes the Trojans will see improvement through the fine tuning of smaller details like stroke counts, turns and breath discipline. ![]() “I would love to see 42 on the scoreboard,” Selin said. Junior Artem Selin who placed first in the 100-yard free at SMU with a personal best of 43.04 is setting his ambitions even higher heading into this weekend’s competition. The Trojans will compete in a multitude of events throughout the weekend, ranging from relays to individual medleys.Ĭoming off a third place finish at last weekend’s SMU Invitational, several athletes are looking to build on or improve their performances.
